Kintaro Oe, a 25-year-old dropout from Tokyo University Law School, bicycles around Japan “learning about life” like an Asian Along Came Bronson. He takes various part-time jobs, surprising everyone by excelling at everything he does, despite his goofy demeanor. He’s lucky he’s a quick study, as he spends most of his time ogling pretty women, cleaning toilets, and getting beat up. In the first three episodes of this six-part 1995 OAV, he writes code at a software company, helps a corrupt mayor get reelected, and learns to make noodles by hand. The animation is often sloppy–Kintaro changes appearance frequntly–and the artists clearly concentrated on the bouncing breasts and jiggling derrieres. Kintaro is a goodhearted and generally agreeable goof, but the slight plots and leering humor of this series will quickly bore anyone but a lecherous adolescent. Spectacular animated action scenes turn the ancient epic poem Beowulf into a modern fantasy movie, while motion-capture technology transforms plump actor Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) into a burly Nordic warrior. When a Danish kingdom is threatened by the monster Grendel (voiced and physicalized by Crispin Glover, River’s Edge), Beowulf–lured by the promise of heroic glory–comes to rescu them. He succeeds, but falls prey to the seductive power of Grendel’s mother, played by Angelina Jolie… and as Jolie’s pneumatically animated form rises from an underground lagoon with demon-claw high heels, it becomes clear that we’re leaving the original epic far, far behind. Regrettably, the motion-capture process has made only modest improvements since The Polar Express; while the characters’ eyes no longer look so flat and zombie-like, their faces remain inexpressive and movements are still wooden. As a result, the most effective sequnces feature wildly animated battles and the most vivid character is Grendel, whose grotesquness ends up making him far more sympathetic than any of the mannequin-like human beings. The meant-to-be-titillating images of a naked Jolie resemble an inflatable doll more than a living, breathing woman (or succubus, as the case may be). But the fights–particularly Grendel’s initial assault on the celebration hut–pop with lushly animated gore and violence. Also featuring the CGI-muffled talents of Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs), Robin Wright Penn (The Princess Bride), and John Malkovich (Dangerous Liaisons). –Bret Fetzer

William Friedkin’s classic policier was propelled to box-office glory, and a fistful of Oscars, in 1972 by its pedal-to-the-metal filmmaking and fashionably cynical attitude toward law enforcement. Gene Hackman’s Popeye Doyle, a brutally pushy New York City narcotics detective, is a dauntless crime fighter and Vietnam-era “pig,” a reckless vulgarian whose antics get innocent people killed. Loosely based upon an actual investigation that led to what was then the biggest heroin seizure in U.S. history, the picture traces the efforts of Doyle and his partner (Roy Scheider) to close the pipeline pumping Middle Eastern smack into the States through the French port of Marseilles. (The actual French Connection cops, Eddie Egan and Sonny Grosso, make cameo appearances.) It was widely recognized at the time that Friedkin had lifted a lot of his high-strung techniqu from the Costa-Gavras thrillers The Sleeping Car Murders and Z–he even imported one of Costa-Gavras’s favorite thugs, Marcel Bozzuffi, to play the Euro-trash hit man plugged by Doyle in an elevated train station. There was an impressive official sequl in 1975, French Connection II, directed by John Frankenheimer, which took Popeye to the south of France and got him hooked on horse. A couple of semi-official spinoffs followed, The Seven-Ups, which elevated Scheider to the leading role, and Badge 373, with Robert Duvall stepping in as the pugnacious flatfoot. –David Chute

Culled from 30 years of material, this collection of moments from The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson contains some of most inspired bits of lunacy ever recorded. Whether cajoling with Hollywood’s biggest stars or normal folk with special talents, Carson was a master of finding the right joke, with timing second to none. Along with bits of his opening monologus, skits, and early standup appearances from the likes of David Letterman and Eddie Murphy, there are many highlights with perhaps the perfect Carson gust–exotic animals that stole the show. This collection was released shortly after Carson’s reign ended in 1992. Although most of the tapes from his first decade are lost, there are plenty of highlights from the ’70s through the ’90s. Also included is Carson’s touching and historic “Final Show,” which finds the host simply talking to his audience and showing highlights–or just the faces–from his years on the set. Although many followed–and a few have even succeeded–Carson’s Midwest charm made him the king of TV in a period when America was defined by television.
The DVD edition adds some superlative extras, including “Danger Johnny” segments from his first decade, short bits on the history of the show and the host, and more behind-the-scenes glances, including an intriguing way to watch the final show via unedited feeds from isolated studio cameras. Also included is the 1982 NBC special “Johnny Goes Home,” which follows Carson on a tour of his rural Nebraska homeland, and a slightly edited version of the penultimate show, in which his last two gusts, Robin Williams and Bette Midler, are on fire. These extras make the DVD, produced a decade after Carson left, a must-have piece of entertainment and pop history. –Doug Thomas
